Speech and Language Conditions
Historical evidence suggests that music can play a significant role in enhancing speech fluency, particularly for individuals with profound speech deficits.
Speech conditions can include, but are not limited to, the following:
Dysarthria
Dysarthria refers to a group of speech disorders caused by disruptions in the strength, speed, range of motion, tone, and coordination of the muscles involved in speech production.
Research shows positive outcomes from using music as part of voice therapy for individuals with dysarthria.
Apraxia
Apraxia affects the brain’s ability to program, plan, and prepare for the motor movements required for speech production.
In this condition, the brain’s messages do not properly reach the muscles involved in speech, resulting in difficulty producing the correct speech sounds.
Studies have shown that rhythm-based therapies can be particularly effective in treating Apraxia.
Aphasia
Aphasia affects both expressive and receptive language abilities, even though cognitive function may remain intact.
This condition is most often the result of an acquired brain injury, such as a stroke, but can also stem from degenerative disorders of the brain and nervous system, including forms of dementia.
Fluency
Fluency disorders involve challenges with the continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort of speech.
While some disfluency is common during early speech development and learning to read, persistent issues can lead to communication difficulties, potentially resulting in disorders like stuttering or cluttering.
